The Swell Season (2011)
This is a documentary about musicians Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglová, who are collectively known as The Swell Season. They rose to prominence in the film Once (2006), where they played musicians with feeling for each other. This documentary chronicles what happened after they did that film (and won Oscars for it) when they went on tour and started dating in real life. Once is one of my favourite films, so I was really keen to see more of these two together. This film ended up being not what I expected. It had very little narrative structure, and is not really a traditional documentary. I liked that though. I liked how raw and real it felt. Sometimes unbelievably so. They had some really interesting things to say about fame and how it effects themselves and everyone else. They shared some perspectives I hadn’t really heard before. Plus, it contained many performances from the band, which are always good to watch because of how talented they are. I’d probably only recommend this film to fans of Hansard and Irglová.
